Why renewables make financial sense in mining.

Why renewables make financial sense in mining.

A remote mine running on 100% diesel at 3 MW of continuous load spends over $23 million a year just on fuel.

By switching to a solar PV and battery storage hybrid, with diesel kept as backup, the mine can meet around 70% of its energy needs from the sun. That cuts the annual energy bill to roughly $7 million, a saving of more than $16 million every year.

The whole system costs around $14 million to build, meaning it pays for itself in under 12 months. On top of the cost savings, the mine eliminates around 7,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually and dramatically reduces the risk and cost of trucking diesel to a remote site. This also means that they can have increased fuel reserves of up to 60% onsite with existing storage.
