2026 - Biggest Year for Utility Scale Solar

2026 will be Australia's biggest year yet for utility-scale solar.

More than 3 GWdc of utility PV is already under construction - and we're only halfway through the year.

Alongside this, @David Dixon writes that 85% of new utility PV starting construction in 2026 has gone DC-coupled, driven by record curtailment and daytime spot prices under A$50/MWh.

@Rystad Energy also estimates DC-coupled systems carry an 11% capex advantage over AC-coupled equivalents, driven by shared inverter and grid connection infrastructure, higher round-trip efficiency, and the ability to capture clipped energy that an AC-coupled inverter would otherwise export as lost potential.

Battery costs are reinforcing the shift too, with storage durations extending from 1–3 hours to 3–4 hours over the past 24 months.
